| Guihulngan Earthquake | |
Posted by braveheart on February 23 2012 10:40:59
February 6, 2012. marks a significant day in the lives of every Guihulnganon and even the first district of Negros Oriental.
The Magnitude 6.9 earthquake had shook Guihulngan and have tested every aspect of how Guihulngan is.
It has destroyed houses and fences , killed people, destroyed roads, destroyed power distribution systems, destroyed water distribution systems, caused landslides, and put the entire economic activity to totally at halt for about a week.
Isolated, no food can be bought, no gasoline or diesel fuel that can be bought, no potable water available, and no safe place to find except open hills and school grounds.
The strong and frequent after shocks have prevented people to go back to work and even go back to their houses if they still have one standing.
People are shocked, traumatized, stunned and whatever you may call it. They are just not ready to get back to where they have been before the quake.
Sadly, no one to ask, no one to get advise from during these dark hours. These were coupled with wrong scary information from both common people and political officials.
The people is caught almost totally unprepared.
People call their loved ones, and friends for help from outside. The local government officials did the same.
We in REACT have alerted our networks and have contacted our partner the Philippine Red Cross through Chairman Dick Gordon. He had provided us media mileage through his program in ABC5 through on-air interviews for us to appeal for help live over national TV network.
Initial reports were made including the hospital situation where all the patients were moved outside by the hospital due to fear of structural failure of the hospital buildings.
The Philippine Red Cross has immediately responded by sending national assessment teams, the provincial chapter team to manage the situation in Guihulngan, they sent a Rub Hall to be used as temporary hospital, some "A" tents for evacuees and some patients. Water purifying stations were also installed to augment potable water sources at the hospital area.
The Philippine Red Cross co-oocupied our REACT Command Center as their Command Post for the Red Cross Operations.
Amazingly, there are more than enough kind hearted , good people, governments, institutions, and organizations that you cannot imagine that flocked to help the victims.
We have received help very quickly from neighboring towns and cities like San Carlos City, Canlaon City, Cadiz, Calatrava, Cebu province, Dumaguete City, Provincial government and many more.
We have all sorts of organizations, fraternities, church organizations, international and local disaster response teams, rescue teams, and medical teams.
Sadly we have casualties, sadly we have reports of political feuds, and issues of using the calamity for political advancement. Issues of relief goods mismanagement and no coordination.
We are glad to have the intervention of national institutions like the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Office of Civil Defense as operations arm of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, the Philippine Army who have worked day and night in the delivery of relief goods to affected areas and doing rescue operations, the Depart of Health
The Philippine Navy and Coast Guard have brought us relief goods through Navy Boats while the roads and bridges are not passable.
While people are still trying to get back on their feet and the local government finding its way to handle the situation. We thank the so many people from all walks of life, from in and out of the country, from Filipinos and non-filipinos alike.
We thank our REACT groups from Cebu: REACT Metro Cebu, REACT Masareal, REACT Mactan and also our REACT groups in Negros firslty REACT Pasayaw of Canlaon who have come quickly to the rescue and REACT Sidlakan of Dumaguete City. They have brought food, water, generators, manpower and cash assistance to aid us in our local operations and our victims.
We cannot thank you enough for your great help!
We will continue to walk through many things after the destructive quake with strength knowing that you have always been there to help us in time of our needs.
To God be the glory and praise! |
