Politicians told: Keep out of graduation rites
Posted by rn2 on March 21 2010 21:28:38
NewsEducation Secretary Jesli Lapus appealed to politicians not to use graduation ceremonies as venues for their campaign.
Lapus said commencement exercises should be memorable, solemn, simple and free from politics.
While the Department of Education (DepEd) does not prohibit schools from inviting politicians as graduation guest speakers, Lapus said politicians must speak on something that will inspire the graduates and not talk about their opponents or platform.
He, however, admitted that this is very hard to implement.
Lapus advised the public not to vote for politicians who take advantage of graduations for their own interests.
Lapus also advised schools to hold rites in their campuses instead of at expensive venues.
Comelec seeks help of LGUs
Posted by rn2 on February 16 2010 08:06:09
NewsThe Commission on Elections in Dumaguete City has sought the help of information officers from local government units in Negros Oriental to help in its drive on educating voters for the automated polls in May. ..At a forum with members of the Association of Negros Oriental Public Information Officers, city elections supervisor Ian Macaraya said COMELEC will have a hard time reaching all towns and cities in the province to instruct citizens on how to vote under the automated election system. …In the automated polls, voters are required to shade at least 50 percent of the oval opposite the names of their chosen candidates or else the counting machine will not read it, he said.
Aside from this, voters should not over vote, or shade an oval opposite the name of a candidate for a position in excess of the number of candidates to be voted for that position. Otherwise, the Precinct Count Optical Scan Unit or PCOS machine will not count the votes for that position in the ballot.
ANOPIO members in the same forum committed to assist COMELEC in their information drive by hanging tarpaulin streamers or banners bearing condensed messages on proper voting in strategic places and key voting centers in their localities.
The members also requested COMELEC to provide them with a uniform design that will be used in printing the tarpaulin materials.
